Arctic Wolves - Feeding and Hunting

As it was already mentioned, Arctic Wolves are found in Alaska, Greenland and northern Canada, where they are secure against human invasion. They are pack animals, and packs usually consist of a mating pair and their yet unmated offspring of different generations. Pregnant females leave packs and dwell in dens, where they give birth to pups and raise them. They take up residence in caves or rock outcroppings, because permafrost makes it hard to dig ground.

Pups feed on milk and food stuff, regurgitated by adult wolves. Mature wolves feed on arctic hares, lemmings, and large prey, such as caribou and musk oxen. These animals are too big and strong for a single wolf; therefore, hunting requires coordinated action of many animals. Wolves succeed when they manage to disperse a herd and take young or weak animals. Feeding usually takes place right on the spot.

Arctic wolves have to roam vast expanses of tundra in search for food, because most part of the year the territory is covered with snow. Their hunting range covers 800-1000 square miles, and sometimes they travel far south in winter, following caribou and oxen. As with other wolf species, Arctic wolves can set on every animal they can physically destroy, using their strong jaws and sharp fangs.
