Arctic Wolves - Description
Arctic Wolves are often white or off-white in color. In the summer the coat is brownish gray. Actually, there are no two absolutely identical wolves, and this is also the case with their voices. These are one of the few mammals, who can withstand seemingly unlivable environment, where temperature rarely shows above -22°C.
The Arctic Wolf is a subspecies of the Gray Wolf, but they have a stockier body built and more rounded ears, making them better suited to their environment. At an average, they are 25-31 inches high at the shoulder, although the largest species reach 36 inches high at the shoulder. The body length ranges between 3 to 5 feet nose to tail. Adults weigh about 170-175 pounds. Arctic wolves live around 7 years in the wild, but in captivity they can live 15-17 years.
Arctic Wolves - Breeding
Arctic wolves start mating in February and March. Gestation period lasts about 60-70 days, and pups are born in May or early June. Litters count only 2-3 pups, which is fewer than it is with other species of wolves. Puppies are born blind and helpless, and they are fully dependent on their mothers. They open eyes after about two weeks. They are born dark, and they turn lighter as they mature. Young Arctic Wolves remain in the pack until they get fully mature at 1 to 2 years of age, when they start looking for their own mates to make their own families.
