These animals are thought to be the ancestors of the domestic dogs; they have the structure of the skull that resembles the dogs. The color of their coat can be chalked white to coal black. An adult gray type is up to 2 m (6.5 ft) in length including the tail (less than half the body length), and weighs up to 80 kg (175 lb).

There are actually two species of these animals: the one is the gray, or timber. It was widely distributed but now found only in Canada, Alaska, and northern Europe and Russia, except for a few isolated packs in other regions.
